Gambrel Expansion
A residential addition and renovation in a well-established neighborhood, this project carefully balances modern living needs while maintaining and respecting the character of the historic Dutch Colonial home. The design introduces a third floor within the existing gambrel roof—a complex challenge that preserves the proportions and character of the masonry structure while reducing the apparent scale of the large addition. The project expands the existing 2,100 sf, 3-bedroom home into a decompressed 3,600 sf, 4-bedroom residence.
The addition creates a seamless flow between spaces, featuring a new living room, expansive open kitchen, pantry, and a butler’s pantry/bar that uniquely opens to the dining room. A new master suite and second-floor laundry enhance daily functionality, while the third floor provides an additional bedroom. Bathrooms are added to all bedrooms, thoughtfully integrated to maintain comfort, privacy, and the home’s elegant aesthetic.
